June 7, 2011 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers – Vancouver Local 846 announced that Canada Post Corporation ceased delivery on multiple routes throughout the Vancouver area beginning on Monday, June 6, 2011. For many residences and businesses mail delivery was suspended due to management laying-off workers who were assigned to these routes. Local President, Robert Mulvin, stated “The rotating strike actions which have been taking place in other parts of the country are designed to minimize the impact to customers while impressing upon the employer that we want a fair, negotiated settlement without roll-backs. The corporation has enjoyed 16 years of profitability with record profits recorded in the heart of the global recession. In this light, roll-backs to our contract are unacceptable to our membership.”

Mulvin went on to say that key issues remaining unresolved include serious health & safety concerns relating to the corporation’s introduction of new mechanized processing plants and unsafe delivery methods that have been implemented without due consideration to ergonomic studies and engineering methodology. “Canada Post recently announced that a new modern post plant would be built near the Vancouver airport. Over $100 million dollars was invested by the corporation in a new plant in Winnipeg without first establishing a proper framework for safe work methods. We believe that this issue must be addressed before more injuries are suffered.” said Mulvin.

No strike action has been announced for the Vancouver area at this time. The union has stated clearly that they are prepared to continue negotiating for a collective agreement that reflects respect, equality and a sharing of the benefits of modernization for its membership.
