ARBITRATION UPDATE
January 22, 2020 Bulletin # 094
We returned to arbitration on January 15 and January 16, 2020. January 16th was the 40th day of hearings. We have arbitration dates scheduled until May of 2020.
January 15 and 16
We heard evidence on Group 3 and 4 issues from Dan Gilbert, GM Engineering and Maintenance. Most of his testimony was about the issues that have already been agreed to by the parties. The issue that is left to resolve for Groups 3 and 4 is a market adjustment of their wages.
Canada Post’s next witness was Leah Lewis, Senior Advisor Mental Health, who testified on our demands for improvements to: the Short Term Disability Plan, Personal Days, Leave for Other Reasons and Injury On Duty. The bulk of her evidence focused on why Canada Post would not agree with any of our demands to improve these important benefits. Her attitude was that we have enough benefits and paid leaves and don’t deserve any more.
What Next?
The next hearing dates are scheduled for February 26 and 28, 2020. We will cross examine Leah Lewis and then hear evidence from Canada Post’s last scheduled witness, Robert Bass, Principal of Bass and Associates, a firm that advises governments and employers on collective bargaining and interest arbitration.
Once Canada Post completes its evidence, we have the opportunity to give rebuttal or reply evidence. This should begin in March.
It is Time for Canada Post to Make Changes to Improve Our Working Conditions and Health & Safety!

ARBITRATION UPDATE
December 20, 2019 Bulletin # 093
Yesterday, without any warning, CPC announced that they would not proceed with their witnesses that were scheduled to appear in the afternoon and today. Their decision will delay the arbitration for several weeks. December 19th, was the 38th day of arbitration.
The Arbitrator has done everything that she can to keep this case moving, however Canada Post appears to have its own agenda and is now not planning to complete its case until at least February 28, 2020. They have now added a new “expert witness” to their list of witnesses.
Another Extension
On December 19, 2019 the Minister of Labour granted the Arbitrator’s request for an extension of her mandate until June 30, 2020.
December 3, 6 and 19
We completed our cross-examination of CPC Witness Sanjay Paliwal on December 3. We then heard evidence from Susan Whiteley, Director of Delivery Strategy, on RSMC issues in dispute. She continued her testimony on December 6 and we completed her cross examination on the morning of December 19. The next scheduled date is January 15, 2020.
You’re working hard during this holiday season again and you deserve negotiated collective agreements. If you celebrate it, have a happy holiday season.
