June 7, 2011 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers – Vancouver Local 846 announced that Canada Post Corporation ceased delivery on multiple routes throughout the Vancouver area beginning on Monday, June 6, 2011. For many residences and businesses mail delivery was suspended due to management laying-off workers who were assigned to these routes. Local President, Robert Mulvin, stated “The rotating strike actions which have been taking place in other parts of the country are designed to minimize the impact to customers while impressing upon the employer that we want a fair, negotiated settlement without roll-backs. The corporation has enjoyed 16 years of profitability with record profits recorded in the heart of the global recession. In this light, roll-backs to our contract are unacceptable to our membership.” Continue reading “June 7, 2011 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: News Release”

Calgary and Edmonton to Strike Tonight

This evening, at midnight local time, Victoria B.C. and Moncton N.B. will return to work.  Tonight, Calgary will commence strike action at 9:00 p.m. local time and Edmonton will join them at 10:00 p.m. local time.  The job actions in both cities will last 24 hours.

These locations were chosen to highlight the adverse impact on postal service resulting from inadequate staffing.  Both cities have experienced service problems as routes have not been delivered due to staff shortages, and postal workers have been required to perform forced overtime.

Benefits cut off

Benefits cut off

Canada Post prematurely chose to suspend the collective agreement and cutoff all benefits including leaves to the members of CUPW effective from the moment we served 72 hour strike notice. This has had a huge negative impact on members who are ill, injured or even just those who have scheduled a June vacation.  This is happening in all locals whether or not they are actually off the job.

The Union strongly disagrees with Canada Post’s legal right to take this action. While there is a National Policy grievance being filed, all individuals affected by this should file their own grievances as well.

Postal strikes and myths – Part 1

Urban Postal Unit Negotiations (2011) / Bulletin

Negotiations Bulletin no. 59

There’s nothing like a postal dispute to bring out the harbingers of “the death of the letter” and even the post office. Right wing groups tend to come out of the woodwork as well. They pounce on the opportunity to advance their view of a postal world where competition prevails and everything magically improves. As a rule, there’s a lot of rhetoric and talk about productivity, volumes and much more. Much gets said during a postal strike and quite a bit of it is bunk. CUPW Reveals New Strike Locations

Negotiations Alert: June 6, 2011

Tonight at 11:30 p.m. EDT, postal service in Montreal will resume.  At midnight local time, CUPW will commence a 24-hour strike action in Victoria, B.C. and Moncton, N.B.

These locations were chosen because they both have experienced significant deterioration of postal service, due to changes in mail processing, introduced by Canada Post Corporation.

Steps Backwards

Today, after reviewing our June 3rd proposals for three days, CPC totally rejected our offer. They made virtually no effort to bring the parties closer together, and in fact, reneged on several of their previous proposals with respect to staffing. June 5, 2011  –  16:25

Strike / Negotiations Alert

Tonight at 11:45 p.m., the strike action at Hamilton will cease and at 11:30 p.m. Montreal will begin a 24-hour work stoppage.

Montreal experiencing health and safety impact of new technology

The Montreal local was chosen as the next location to highlight the problems experienced by postal workers who are dealing directly with the new technology and work methods resulting from CPC’s $2 billion mechanization program.
The new delivery work methods have been introduced at the Monterey facility and the new mail processing equipment has been introduced at the
Léo-Blanchette Mail Processing Plant.

The CUPW National Executive Board will select future locations for strike activity based on developments at the bargaining table.
