Your help is needed now on Bill C-377.
The Harper government has rammed through Bill C-377. This bill would place excessively onerous financial reporting requirements on unions. The Canadian Bar Association says that the bill would invade the personal privacy of individual Canadians and is likely unconstitutional. Canada’s federal Privacy Commissioner also said that the bill would invade personal privacy and overreaches in its intent. Despite this, C-377 is now being considered for final passage at the Senate of Canada. It is being reported that even Conservative senators are having doubts about this bill. It is not too late to take action. It will only take a few minutes of your time email your senators. Click “read more” to find out how.

Example: Dear Senator ___________: I understand that the Senate is considering Bill C-377. I urge you to vote “no” to this legislation. It has been accurately described as discriminatory, anti-union, extraordinarily costly, and probably unconstitutional. All associations that pay dues with tax exemption should be treated the same by the CRA. To isolate unions, which are already fully transparent with their dues paying members, is discriminatory therefore likely to be disallowed under a charter challenge. The predicted costs of administration and monitoring would exceed those of the scrapped gun registry. I ask that you see past the political motivation of this Bill and defeat this legislation. Thank you, |
To date, we are aware that many Senators are agreeing that this Bill is deeply flawed and discriminates against unions.
We thank you for your action today.
