“The Turtle Island Course aims to build meaningful, long-term relationships with Indigenous peoples’ history in Canada, connects these historic events to the current context, and debunks myths and stereotypes.

It concludes with participants identifying ways to act as effective and respectful allies to Indigenous peoples in their struggle for decolonization.”

Space is extremely limited for this popular course. If you’ve already attended this course, or if you haven’t attended a General Membership Meeting in the 12 months prior to the application deadline, you will not be eligible to apply.

CUPW PENSION COURSE

Sunday, April 16^th, 2023

8am – 4pm

Application deadline is Friday, March 31^st, 2023 at noon.

ASL Interpreters have been requested but are not yet confirmed.

The course includes information on our pension plan history, current health of the plan, buying back time, early and medical retirement, retirement calculated (what do I get and what’s deducted?), benefits after retirement, CPP/OAS basics, survivors and dependent benefits, marriage breakdown/divorce and your pension, penalty tables, what’s the best time to retire, and much, much more!

This course is meant to be in addition to the Retirement Seminar offered by CPC and explains our Pension Plan from CUPW’s perspective. This course is co-facilitated by Retirement Committee member Marion Pollack.

Education application forms must be legible and completed in full or applications will not be accepted.
Please indicate your estimated retirement date so we can prioritize limited class space.
Book offs are not available for this course so please ensure you have this day off before submitting your application.
There are no prerequisites or meeting requirements for this course.

VANCOUVER LOCAL BASIC SHOP STEWARD COURSE

February 16, 17 & 18th

8 A.M. – 4 P.M. (Thursday, Friday & Saturday)

*These courses will be held in person unless public health guidelines change. *

This 3-day course is for Vancouver Local Members who are either interested in becoming Shop Stewards or want to learn more about their rights under the Collective Agreement.

Course prerequisite: You MUST have attended at least one (1) General Membership Meeting in the past twelve (12) months, and be a member in good standing prior to the course application deadline.

Please fill out the Vancouver Local Education application form legibly and in full. Must include your work location, shift, and days off. Partially completed or illegible applications will not be accepted.

LEADERSHIP SKILLS

HARRISON HOT SPRINGS

FEBRUARY 12 – 17, 2023

The Pacific Region has scheduled a 5-day Leadership Skills course from February 12 – 17, 2023. This CUPW course will be held as part of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) Winter School at the Harrison Hot Springs Resort & Spa, 100 Esplanade Avenue, Harrison Hot Springs, B. C.

This course provides an opportunity for union activists to collectively analyze and work on the challenges involved in representing and mobilizing the membership.

It provides an opportunity for newer union activists to hone their skills and for long time leaders to reenergize.

Participants work on their communication and shop floor organizing skills and assess the challenges ahead. Included are sessions on face-to-face communications, CUPW and the media, building allies, and workplace organizing.

The deadline for registration is 12 p.m. on Thursday, December 15, 2022. Please ensure your applications are in by that date, any application received after the deadline will not be considered. Space is limited to 20 participants.

To be considered, all applications must be signed and submitted by the Local President or designated.

As this course is offered under the PEL provisions of our collective agreement, all costs including loss of wages, transportation and meals will be paid by the National Union.

There will be some evening sessions involved and that all sessions of the course are mandatory.

Fall Education Seminars – November 17 – 20, 2022 – Harrison Hot Springs

The Fall education seminars for the Pacific Region will be held at Harrison Hot Springs Resort. The courses will run from Thursday, November 17^th to November 20^th, 2022. The following courses are being offered:

BASIC SHOP STEWARD

This course aims to provide new Stewards with basic training, knowledge and confidence. Topics include the different roles of the Steward, how to investigate and file a grievance, communication skills, Shop Steward rights, the Steward as Organizer/Mobilizer, and key provisions of the Urban Operations and RSMC Collective Agreements.

Note: This course is for new Stewards.

CHANGES TO COLLECTIVE AGREEMENT – URBAN

This course outlines the changes to the Urban Operations Collective Agreement between CUPW and Canada Post.

It is particularly recommended for Local Executive members, Grievance Officers and Stewards, but could be offered to other members. Since this is an update course, participants should already be familiar with the Urban Collective Agreement.
