Solidarity and Support for the BC Lower Mainland

December 13, 2021

Members across the country have
British Columbia residents in their
thoughts after weeks of record rainfall,
flooding and landslides, which created
perhaps the country’s most expensive
natural disaster ever seen. Emergency
response efforts are just shifting into
recovery mode.

Many communities were isolated by
floods, landslides and bridge washouts;
people are missing and there are five
reports of death. Farming communities
are devastated by flooding, hundreds of
thousands of farm animals have died,
and food and water supplies are

December 8, 2021

All members actively at work were required to attest to vaccination status by
November 26 or be placed on leave without pay. This is an update for those who did attest.

Canada Post Corporation has established a national safety audit and compliance team to perform random spot-checks. You may be contacted and asked for proof of the status you attested to.

You may be contacted by either email or a letter to your home and asked to submit proof from the appropriate provincial health authority within five (5) business days of receiving the request. Letters and emails should start to be issued next week.

Special Leave versus Personal days

November 22nd,2021

There have been many questions about when members can use paid special leave; hopefully the following will help explain some of this.

Clause 21.03 Leave for Other Reasons {page 174 of the Urban Collective Agreement} says:

“Where conditions warrant it, special leave with pay may be granted when circumstances not directly attributable to the employee, including but not limited to illness in the immediate family, as decided in clause 21.02, prevent his or her reporting for duty.
Such leave will not be unreasonably withheld. An employee can only be granted leave with pay under this clause once he or she has exhausted all of his or her Personal Days.”

CANADA POST’S MANDATORY VACCINATION PRACTICE: CUPW UPDATE

November 18, 2021

CUPW has filed a cease and desist application against Canada Post’s vaccination practice which will be heard by Arbitrator Burkett on November 24, 2021. We have also filed national grievances against the practice.

CUPW supports voluntary COVID-19 vaccination, and is proud that many of our members have been vaccinated. However, CUPW is concerned that the mandatory vaccination practice goes farther than required.
