CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)

As of March 5, 2020, 45 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Canada. In addition, the Government of Quebec reported their third case of COVID-19 and the Government of Alberta reported their first case of COVID-
19. The provinces have sent their presumptive positive samples to the National Microbiology Laboratory for further testing.

The risk to Canadian travellers may vary depending on their destination. We invite you to consult the PHAC website (below) to find out how COVID-19 is spreading in different countries.

ARBITRATION UPDATE

January 22, 2020                                                                                                    Bulletin # 094

We returned to arbitration on January 15 and January 16, 2020. January 16th was the 40th day of hearings. We have arbitration dates scheduled until May of 2020.

January 15 and 16

We heard evidence on Group 3 and 4 issues from Dan Gilbert, GM Engineering and Maintenance. Most of his testimony was about the issues that have already been agreed to by the parties. The issue that is left to resolve for Groups 3 and 4 is a market adjustment of their wages.

Canada Post’s next witness was Leah Lewis, Senior Advisor Mental Health, who testified on our demands for improvements to: the Short Term Disability Plan, Personal Days, Leave for Other Reasons and Injury On Duty. The bulk of her evidence focused on why Canada Post would not agree with any of our demands to improve these important benefits. Her attitude was that we have enough benefits and paid leaves and don’t deserve any more.

What Next?

The next hearing dates are scheduled for February 26 and 28, 2020. We will cross examine Leah Lewis and then hear evidence from Canada Post’s last scheduled witness, Robert Bass, Principal of Bass and Associates, a firm that advises governments and employers on collective bargaining and interest arbitration.

Once Canada Post completes its evidence, we have the opportunity to give rebuttal or reply evidence. This should begin in March.

It is Time for Canada Post to Make Changes to Improve Our Working Conditions and Health & Safety!

Shop Steward Elections

Nominations for Shop Stewards are now open. The deadline for nominations to be returned to the Union Hall is Friday February 28, 2020.

Pursuant to Article 9.4(g) of the Vancouver Local By-Laws: To be elected as a Shop Steward a nominee must have completed a basic shop steward course, as well as be a Member in Good Standing. Nominators must also be Members in Good Standing.

Stewards who were elected in January 2018 need to run for re-election, as their two (2) year term is coming to an end.

Stewards who were elected in the January 2019 Steward elections do not have to run in this election because they are only one (1) year into their two (2) year term.

Any Stewards who were appointed by the Local Executive Committee since the last annual election must also run for election this January in order to maintain their position.

Elections will take place in every installation during the annual elections to be held in March 2020. The Balloting Committee will issue a bulletin with the balloting schedule in the near future.

Nomination and acceptance forms are attached for your convenience. These may be faxed to this office at 604-685-4931 if you choose.

All Other Shop Stewards Are Required To Run For Election To Hold Their Position!
