Typhoon Haiyan – You Can Help!

On Friday, November 10, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan slammed into the southern Philippines. This typhoon is being called the “most powerful storm in history” and packed maximum sustained winds of 315 kph. It has caused catastrophic destruction, injury and loss of life.

Our thoughts go out to the people of the Philippines, the Filipino-Canadian community and especially to our many Filipino friends and co-workers here in Vancouver.

At this time the full extent of the tragedy has yet to be determined, but what we do know is how we can reach out and send some help:

MSC Restructure Update – Depot 74

alt

We have finally come to the end of the saga of the restructuring of the Part time Mail Service Couriers in Depot 74. In total we managed to gain back a few of the routes that the Corporation had cut in the original restructure that was implemented in June. From the eight (8) routes management had cut, we regained three (3) for a total loss of five (5) part time routes.

We have agreed to have a unit bid that is currently happening and it will be implemented on November 18, 2013. Continue reading “MSC Restructure Update – Depot 74”

WORKSAFE BC APPROVES WAGE LOSS CLAIM RESULTING FROM HARASSMENT AT HANDS OF CANADA POST SUPERVISOR!

altIn a decision dated July 5, 2013, WorkSafe BC awarded wage loss compensation to a South Vancouver Delivery Center (SVDC) Letter Carrier in respect to a workplace absence that resulted directly from the harassment that she suffered at the hands of her supervisor, Carmelo Renzullo. IKEA No More?

Every summer, Postal Workers across Canada quietly brace for the menace that is the IKEA catalogues to arrive. However as we fast forward to October, the IKEA catalogues have yet to find their way into the waiting arms of Letter Carriers. Where did they go? Many of us have heard whispers in small corners and unconfirmed rumours of their arrival, pure gossip really, but nothing has materialized. Just as summer has come and gone, so have the IKEA catalogues. So what happened? The answer may not surprise you.

Joint Communique: Ikea Catalogue

alt

October 11, 2013

Every August, in what seems like some sadistic tradition, Canada Post rolls out hundreds of thousands of IKEA catalogues across the country and places them squarely on the backs of Letter Carriers. This “wonderful business opportunity” provides CPC with a handsome sum, which trickles down to the workers at a rate of $0.07 per piece delivered. For the pleasure of breaking our backs, we get a whole $7 for every 100 we deliver!

But August has come and gone, so where are the catalogues?

Banking on a Future for Canada Post

altOctober 16th is Canada Post’s 32nd anniversary as a Crown corporation. CUPW National will be marking this anniversary with an action in Ottawa. This action will emphasize that Canada Post cannot cut its way to a better future and that it has another option that has worked at postal administrations around the world. The Corporation could add banking and financial services to improve its financial picture and preserve public postal services and jobs.

To this end, CUPW will be employing a “Banking on a future for Canada Post” theme on October 16th.

As part of this action we will be distributing buttons with the same message to all members in the Vancouver local.

We ask our members to please support this action by wearing these buttons on October 16th, 2013.

Management needs to know that the members understand that the corporation has options other than cutting and that they support the union’s position on postal banking.

In Solidarity,

Andy Henderson
Secretary-Treasurer
CUPW Vancouver
