A Thank You from Libby Davies, MP

Dear Robert,

I wanted to write and say many thanks to your members who give such great service!

A couple of times (one very recently) I have received mail at my home address, even though the address on the envelope was an old campaign office address. I can only infer that your members are so good that they noticed it’s an old address and then very kindly re-directed to my home, where my local letter carrier always does an awesome job.

In the most recent case, the handwritten letter was from an oldtimer from the Downtown Eastside who had used an old campaign office address from Commercial Drive. I know if I had never gotten the letter he would have felt upset and wondered why I never replied. But fortunately for me, your members were very helpful and pro-active, and now I can write him back (and make sure he has our correct community office address on Main Street!).

So this is just to say- THANKS!! I really appreciate and value what you all do (especially in these hard times).

Please pass on my thanks and appreciation to CUPW members.

Yours Sincerely,

Libby Davies, MP for Vancouver East

Compulsory Overtime Grievance Win.

“In all, I conclude that this grievance succeeds and a declaration is to issue that the Corporation’s 2009 widely followed national directive ultimately led to a regular course of action under the last step of article 17.04 vhich violated the Corporation’s contracted obligations under article 15.14 to reasonably minimize compulsory overtime. In effect, the policy directive only served to abandon the express contracted reasonableness obligation thereunder which the Corporation is unable to do in this current collective agreement without agreement of the Union. I am remaining seized pending the possibility of the parties making further representations on additional remedy were that to be the situation, and in the event that any further directions or clarification are required.” Tom Jolliffe, Q.C.

EMERGENCY RALLY AGAINST BACK TO WORK LEGISLATION

The Harper government’s Minister of Labour, Lisa Raitt, has struck once more and introduced back to work legislation.

This time her attack on the collective bargaining process and the right to strike is focused on CP Rail workers. As postal workers we are still living through the effects of her similar attack against us.

On May 29, 2012 members of the Teamsters, PSAC, CUPW and others gathered for an emergency rally at Library Square, Vancouver.
