National Day of Mourning

Every year workers across Canada observe a minute of silence on April 28th to commemorate those who have lost their lives as a result of work-related accidents or occupational diseases. This year the 28th falls on a Saturday, a day most postal workers have as a regular day off, so we are asking that the minute of silence be observed on Friday, April 27th. There will also be a ceremony April 28th at 11:00 a.m. at the New Westminster Quay. (Click here for details).

Year after year workers continue to die simply because they come to work. We work in a country where years of “cutting red tape” to “create a business friendly environment” mean profits continue to trump safety. Too many workplaces are not as safe as they could be.

This past year tragedy touched our local once again. This past week a second BC sawmill exploded resulting in the deaths of two more workers. The latest figures available on WorkSafeBC’s website show 185 total deaths occurring in 2010 and reported by March 31, 2011.

During the minute of silence, we will send thoughts of heartfelt condolences to the fallen and their families. We should also use this minute to contemplate what we as workers can do to force our employers, our provincial and our federal governments to take our health and safety more seriously.

UNION TO ASK COURT TO REMOVE GUY DUFORT AS ARBITRATOR

As previously reported, Minister of Labour, Lisa Raitt appointed arbitrator Guy Dufort as the new arbitrator in the Final Offer Selection (FOS) arbitration between the urban CUPW unit and Canada Post Corporation (CPC). Due to the fact that Mr. Dufort had represented Canada Post Corporation for five years in the PSAC pay equity case, and because of his very significant involvement with the Conservative Party of Canada, CUPW requested Mr. Dufort to recuse himself from the arbitration because of his conflict of interest.

We have now received the decision of Mr. Dufort in which he has refused the union’s request. The Union will now proceed to the courts to have Mr. Dufort removed from the file. In the meantime we will ask Mr. Dufort to stay the proceedings until such time as the court has rendered a decision.

Women’s Committee Bulletin – March 2012

Women’s Committee Bulletin

March 2012

The Federal Conservatives – the same people who ordered us back to work, are now challenging a  woman’s right to reproductive choice.

The Federal Conservatives have given valuable Parliamentary time to their own MP Stephen Woodsworth to put forward motion M-312.  This motion calls for a special parliamentary committee to examine whether the Criminal Code definition of when a child becomes a “human being” should be changed to extend legal personhood to fetuses.

DEMOCRACY IS WORTH FIGHTING FOR

DEMOCRACY IS WORTH FIGHTING FOR – JOIN US TO RALLY AND MARCH FOR FAIR ELECTIONS

Stephen Harper hopes the election fraud issue will just fade away.  Don’t let him get away with it!

Concerned individual Canadians and organizations including Leadnow, DemocracyCanada and the Council of Canadians invite you to join us once again in the streets of Vancouver to demand a full investigation into the Robo-calls scandal.

SATURDAY MARCH 31 – 2 PM
THE VANCOUVER ART GALLERY

We must restore the integrity of the election process and defend our democratic right to a government freely and honestly chosen.  We demand answers and the restoration of democracy: through Elections Canada, a Parliamentary investigation, an independent inquiry, a Royal Commission or legal challenges.

Many activists, political representatives and labour spokespeople have already spoken out. More are joining in every day. Final speakers list for the rallies before and after the march will be announced as soon as possible. Make your voice heard – as we march – and at the open mic. Speak our for integrity, democracy, fair and free elections.

Canadians will not be silent.  We will not be passive. We will not go away!
