Members of the CUPW Vancouver Local:

Negotiations between CUPW and Canada Post are set to begin this month after our membership, both locally and nationally, voted overwhelmingly in favour of the National Program of Demands. It is critical for all of us to understand the issues, what we stand to lose, and why we need to show strong support for our Negotiating Committee, who will be working hard to ensure that we emerge from this round of collective bargaining with a contract that is based on three principles: respect, equality and sharing the benefits of new technology.

It’s on.

It’s on!

Today Postal Workers throughout the Vancouver Local and across Canada took part in various activities and demonstrations displaying their solidarity and telling Canada Post that IT’S ON!

“Everybody needs to know it’s on because this round of bargaining is about the future of our public post office,” said Denis Lemelin, National President of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. “‘We are calling on the employer to expand services to the public and to fulfill its social responsibility as a Crown Corporation.”

The Vancouver Local is collecting images and video of the events.

If you captured any images or video of the events at your postal installation, please send them to: [email protected]

Our collective agreement expires on January 31, 2011. All indications are that the corporation will be bringing a number of demands that CUPW members simply can’t accept. Though we won’t really know what their demands are until we get to the bargaining table, rumour has it the corporation will be asking to eliminate our sick days in favour of a short-term disability plan, to eliminate pre-retirement leave and to cut the seventh week of vacation. Whatever regressive demands they bring to the table, one thing we can be sure of is that this will be our toughest round of bargaining in a generation and there is a significant chance we will end up on the picket line.

Health & Safety September 2010

Members of the CUPW
Vancouver Local:

We hope that the end of summer finds you replenished, revitalized, and ready to begin another busy season at the post office, and we can tell you that from our visits to the VMPP and VPDC, the heavy mail volumes that we are seeing suggest that this will indeed be a busy season.

As we begin to see more mail on the floor and fewer workers to process that mail, please respect your body and its limits and work safely. Do not feel pressured to rush and compensate when Canada Post fails to ensure adequate staffing requirements.
