As we continue to hear about all the amazing work being done by CUPW members to ensure that the postal service continues. However, this pandemic has been affecting our social life, as well as our physical, psychological and even economic well-being.
As frontline workers, we have a responsibility to take care of each other at work and at home.
The current crisis can be a source of stress, even anxiety for many people, including postal workers. The role of our Social Stewards is more important now more than ever and Social Stewards continue to play a crucial role in helping CUPW members get the assistance they need. CUPW has supported the use Social Stewards for a number of years. Where Canada Post’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) doesn’t meet your needs, our Social Stewards can lend a helping hand.
The Quebec Federation of Labour along with Yves Hénault CUPW National Union Representative, Education (French) developed a strong and much needed Social Steward’s program and CUPW used their experience to develop and train our own Social Steward’s network.
Social Stewards are not counsellors. Social Stewards are not therapists or social workers. Instead, they are your co-workers who have received special training to assist you in a time of need. Social stewards are trained to refer individuals towards support services designed to assist you.
Unfortunately, Social Steward are not recognized in our Collective Agreement. Something we hope to change in the next round of bargaining.
Take care of yourself
- Remember what you have used in the past to get through a difficult time.
- Rely on your personal strengths.
- Be aware of your feelings, emotions and reactions, and give yourself permission to express them to someone you trust.
- Keep in touch with the people who comfort you and trust.
If you are experiencing signs of stress, anxiety or depression, Social Stewards can help you. These co-workers are there to listen to you and refer you to available resources you may need.
If you do not know who your social steward is, ask the CUPW representatives on your Local Joint Health and Safety Committee (LJHSC), your shop steward, your local, or your regional office. They will help you find a social steward.
All information is kept confidential and proper help and guidance will be provided.
Vancouver local have 4 Social Stewards working tirelessly to help our members at all locations.
