Negotiations Alert: CUPW Members Should Prepare to Support the Negotiating Committee

Urban Postal Unit Negotiations (2011) / News Alert

As stated yesterday the National Negotiating Committee and National Executive Board are meeting to evaluate the situation and plan our next move. Consequently, the CUPW National Executive Board has decided not to submit a 72-hour strike notice today. There will be no strike activity on June 1st.

CUPW’s Approach is Responsible and Practical

The Union entered into these negotiations determined to address many workplace problems, such as excessive workload, inadequate staffing, and the constant harassment of workers when they are sick or injured. We also came with proposals to address the problems resulting from the introduction of the new equipment and sequencing of mail as part of the CPC’s 2 billion Modern Post program. Examples of our proposals include greater rotation of duties, ergonomic studies, proper time values and the implementation of a one bundle delivery method for points of call other than centralize delivery and stop and go.

After Seven Months CPC Prefers Media Stunts to Bargaining

During seven months of bargaining CPC has not addressed our demands. Instead of dealing with the issues and making counter-proposals they exaggerated the cost so they could issue a news release attacking the Union. Their $1.4 billion media stunt may have been successful in distracting the media from the real issues involved in the bargaining, but it has done nothing to move the negotiations forward.

Prepare to Support Your Bargaining Committee

All indications are that your National Negotiating Committee will need your help to convince management to respond more favourably to our proposals to address the very real problems that exist in the workplace.  All members should be prepared to participate in strike action in the very near future.
