Pushing the Boundaries
Every so often an unexpected triumph over an injustice, or more pointedly, a moral victory, is visited upon us when we least expect it. In this particular instance, it was the efforts of one person at Depot 74 whom deserves our thanks. The following tells the story of the selfless act of devotion demonstrated by one member who set out to right what was put wrong by Canada Post.
In 2013 Canada Post management, without consultation, violated the provisions of our Collective agreement by repositioning the boundaries and adding Retail Postal Outlets (RPOs) to routes at Depot 74 without applying the appropriate time values. This resulted in Letter Carriers having to deviate from the line of travel. After the dust settled, eleven (11) members were affected and were completely unaware that no actions had been taken to compensate for this alteration.
Following years of dedication and sacrifice to route measurement, a member of Depot 74 foresaw the magnitude of this transgression and sought to remedy the error. A grievance was promptly filed and steps were taken to investigate and compile evidence. To face off against a multi-national corporation is daunting for most, but not with this particular person. Armed with nothing more than a pencil, a map, a calculator, and an exceptional moral sense, this particular person began compiling evidence.
As the months dragged on and after countless hours of unpaid work for this member, the employer time and time again refused to resolve the issue. At no time did this discourage the member’s efforts, this only furthered her resolve. As we fast forward to today, I am proud to say the tireless efforts of this person arrived in the form of paid justice. To be clear, this victory provided no financial return to this person, however over $3000 will be returned and distributed to the eleven (11) affected workers! After learning of this, I made a point of contacting this individual to congratulate her for all of her hard work. When asked what I can do to thank her for all of her efforts, she replied; “Your gratitude is thanks enough”. I was lost for words.
Stefanie Neumann words cannot express my gratitude for your tireless efforts and selfless devotion to help others. Your dedication, support, and contributions to this Union transcend expectations. The sacrifices and countless hours you have given will echo throughout your work floor and to all members across this Local and Region. Your humility is a testament to your character and I hope you continue to bequeath us with your knowledge and experience. In writing this, I hope the members who happen to read this, even if for a brief moment, get the opportunity to experience the impact of your contributions bestowed upon this Local’s membership.
Your victory gives a new hope to all those who previously may have elected not to pursue a grievance out of fear or frailty. As a former observer, I share the understanding that most people will never know the amount of work one puts into route measurement. As your friend, you have my everlasting respect and admiration. Thank you for all that you have done for the membership of the Vancouver Local.
In Solidarity,
