Topic:  Indigenous Women’s Perspectives

Guest Speakers:

Laurie Buckley is Cree with mixed heritage who lives and works on the stolen territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Wahtuth people known as ‘Vancouver’. She has worked in many arts organizations as a communications professional, programmer, facilitator, and performance artist. She is a convening member of the Virago Nation Indigenous Arts Society, where she produces and performs in shows and workshops with the mission to reclaim Indigenous sexuality from the toxic effects of colonization. She has been invited to perform and share her de-colonial point of view for arts events including the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival, Talking Stick Festival, the Vancouver Queer Film Festival as well as numerous other arts festivals.

Kirsten Baker-Williams is a member of the Skwxwu7mesh Nation and is of mixed-ancestry. She has been a life-long learner of the Skwxwu7mesh Snichim (Squamish Language) and has worked on First Nations language revitalization in the field of education for the past 20 years. The positions include teacher, curriculum developer, principal, regional principal, and director. She will discuss the importance of language revitalization efforts from across BC and how critical it is to Canadians in achieving reconciliation.

Meagan Goudreault is of mixed ancestry Cree, Métis and Dutch. She currently resides with her family, part of the Anishinaabeg, on the traditional territory of the K’omoks First Nation. She is an active member of CUPW who is honored to be a part of the CUPW National Human Rights Committee’s Indigenous Working group, a part of the Indigenous Employee Resource group (made up of members from the different unions and management at Canada Post), while also being a current facilitator for CUPW working alongside other Indigenous facilitators to deliver the Turtle Island course. She will be talking about the Turtle Island course and the current work she is involved in with the union’s support…always with the intent of decolonizing colonial structures, institutions and ourselves, opening us up to the possibilities.

All women are welcome to participate on the Committee. If you would like to discuss a specific topic, please send them in advance to my attention via email: [email protected].
